Blending Tradition with Contemporary Elegance

Design Challenge

Our team faced the task of modernizing a traditional Georgian-style home while respecting its architectural heritage. The primary challenges included:

  1. Limited natural light due to small windows and low ceilings
  2. Closed-off spaces that restricted flow and functionality
  3. Outdated finishes that didn’t reflect the homeowners’ contemporary tastes
  4. The need to create a warm, cozy atmosphere in a northern climate
Our Solution

We approached this partial renovation with a focus on opening up spaces, increasing light, and creating a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements.

  1. Open Concept Living:
    • Removed non-bearing walls to connect the kitchen, dining, and living areas
    • Enlarged the foyer-to-living room opening, creating a vista from the front door to the backyard
  2. Maximizing Light and Space:
    • Reconfigured a powder room to add a fully functional wet bar
    • Applied a five-step, high-gloss lacquer to ceiling coffers, enhancing reflectivity and perceived height
  3. Warmth Meets Modernity:
    • Enveloped the living room in warm pecky cypress and clear cypress wood
    • Commissioned a custom limestone fireplace mantle and hearth
    • Selected wide plank wood floors for an updated feel
  4. Functional Elegance:
    • Designed a bright, open kitchen with white oak, polished brass, and quartzite
    • Created a hidden, fully functional coffee bar
    • Installed a striking wet bar with backlit glass and brass shelving
  5. Textural Harmony:
    • Curated a rich palette of textures: mohair, wool, brushed linens, stone, wood, horn, metals, and glass
    • Used light creams with pops of taupe in the family area to bring the outdoors in
The Result

A home that honors its Georgian roots while embracing modern living—open, light-filled spaces that flow seamlessly, combining warmth and sophistication in a truly personalized design.
